Italians to open season with Spain friendly

Italy will host Spain in an international friendly at the start of next season, the Italian federation has confirmed.

Spain, the reigning world and European champions, will face the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ winners in Bari on 10 August.

A statement on the Italian federation’s official website read:

The friendly match between the National team coached by Cesare Prandelli and the World champion Spain will be played in Bari, at the San Nicola stadium on Wednesday, August 10th.
The decision was made today by the FIGC president Giancarlo Abete after talks with the Bari president, Vincenzo Matarrese. The FIGC has already contacted the municipal administration and the club for all the organizational and logistic aspects and for the initiatives that will accompany the return of the National team to Bari for an important friendly match against a team that won its first World Cup title in the Summer of 2010 at the World Cup in South Africa after winning the European title in 2008.

The last meeting between the sides came in the UEFA EURO 2008 quarter-finals, when Spain beat Italy on penalties in Vienna en route to winning the title.
